Kabir Chetna Samman

The DRC has instituted an award after the name of Kabir, the doyen of Bhakti Movement and venerated by Dalits. It has been named as ‘Kabir Chetna Samman‘ and carries an amount of Rs.50, 000/- (fifty thousand only). It shall be awarded to a Hindi literary magazine/journal that fulfils the following criteria: it should have been in regular publication since a minimum period of five or more years with sufficient space on Dalit issues and should be widely popular among Hindi literary readers. A panel of experts duly constituted will evaluate the journal/magazine for the award. The awarded magazine/journal will be required to publish a special issue inclusive of sixty per cent writings by Dalit popular writers. Tadbhav; Sakshatkaar; Vasudha; Aashy; Aakaar; Bagartha; Hans; Kathadesh; Samkaleen Bhartiya Sahitya and in daily newspapers like Ujjala; Dainik Jagran; Hindustan; Amrit Prabhat; Times of India; UNI and PTI News Agencies. Some of the institutions/scholars to whom DRC approached to invite their nominations are Sahitya Academy, Ferozshah Kotla Marg, New Delhi, Madhya Pradesh Sahitya Academy, Sanskrit Bhawan, Banganga Chauraha, Bhopal, K.K. Birla Foundation, Lodhi Road, New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan, Lucknow, Rajasthan Sahitya Academy, Punjab Sahitya Academy, Chandigarh, NCERT, New Delhi, Heads of Departments of Hindi and Cultural Studies. It was decided to choose that literary magazine/journal for the award that has worked towards the publication of Dalit literature and at the same time which gives the writer instant popularity as soon as their writings get published in such magazines/journals. The Institute then sought consent from these magazines and journals to publish a special issue inclusive of sixty per cent writings by Dalit popular writers. The Director of the Institute then formed a three member committee to choose the deserving magazine/journal for the said award. Six magazine/journals were short listed for the purpose, namely: Tadbhav, editor-Shri Akhilesh; Hans, editor- Shri Rajendra Yadav; Vasudha, editor- Shri Kamla Prasad; Gyanoday- editor, Shri Prabhakar Shotriya; Vagarth, editor- Shri Ravindra Kalia; Vartman Sahitya, editor- Vibhuti Narayan Rai.

Out of these six short listed magazines/journals, Kabir Chetna Samman- 2005 has been awarded to a Hindi magazine, ‘Hans’, whose contribution towards the issues of marginalized communities has been immense and widely known. Therefore, the panel of experts, constituted to confer this award took decision in favour of the Hans magazine. The magazine has published a special issue inclusive of sixty per cent writings by Dalit popular writers in December, 07. Second, Kabir Chetna Samman-2006 has been awarded to a Hindi magazine, ‘Tadbhav’, whose contribution towards the issues of deprived and subaltern communities has been widely known. Therefore, the panel of experts, constituted to confer this award took decision in favour of the magazine. The magazine has also agreed to publish a special issue probably in July, 08 inclusive of seventy percent writings by Dalit popular writers.
