The booklet exposes devilry of Hindus behind identifying untouchables as ‘Harijan’ by Gandhi. Infact, due to his firm belief in varna-system , he betrayed Dalits and deplumed them under hegemonic Brahmanic structure. In south India, illegitimate babies of devdasi and priests are known as Harijan. The word Harijan only substantiates their precarious social position. These people brushed aside this nomenclature. Gandhi ji did nothing to improve their social status. He even supported caste-based occupation. This was the bone of contention between Gandhi and Ambedkar. Gandhiji did nothing to improve social, political and economic condition of Dalits. Nothing could be achieved only by accepting untouchability as a blemish. Dr. Ambedkar strived for separate constitutional status to Dalit. To end their subjugation, self-respect and generosity should be instilled in them by exploration of history. Problem of untouchability is not social but political. Communal Award- protector of rights of dalits was opposed by Gandhi. Then, how could we imagine liberation of dalits by the hands of Gandhivadins?
