also a great narrative and not merely a monolithic kind of democratic participation."

Chatrapati Sahu Ji Maharaj , a great visionary, played a quintessential role to uplift Bahujan social status and tried to establish a society rooted in equality, fraternity, justice and freedom. Born on 26th April , 1874 at Kolhapur in a kurmi family, he ascended throne on 2nd April 1894 and ruled till 1922. He opened the gates of democracy by establishing social equality , which was vehemently opposed by the Brahaminical forces. He found literacy as best medium to arouse social and political awareness among dalits. He conducted a survey of Kolhapur in 1901 which depicts the pitiable condition of dalits. To uplift them , he reserved 50% posts for SC / ST/ Backwards . Now Dalits are desperately seeking for justice. Though we are facing institutional failures but that does not permit one to doubt sincerity of Shahuji in building the foundation of equality for all sections of society.
